Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in education. From personalized learning paths to automatic feedback on assignments, AI promises more effective, efficient, and tailored learning. But as appealing as that sounds, there are also risks involved. What happens if we leave the learning process too much to algorithms? In this blog, we dive into the main risks of AI-driven learning and why human oversight remains crucial.

Personalized, but limited perspective

One of the greatest promises of AI in education is personalization. AI systems analyze student data and tailor content to their level, learning pace, or preferences. But this algorithmic learning path is only as good as the data on which it is based. There is a risk that students will actually gain a more limited perspective, because the system repeatedly offers them only what they already seem to be able to understand, thus avoiding challenges that actually stimulate growth. Instead of stimulating curiosity, AI systems can unintentionally narrow learning experiences.

Data-driven ≠ people-oriented

AI-driven learning environments collect and analyze enormous amounts of data: click behavior, response patterns, error analyses. Although this provides insight, there is a danger in reducing the learning process to a sum of data profiles. Learning also involves emotion, motivation, frustration, and self-confidence—factors that cannot be fully captured in numbers. If AI is guided solely by quantitative signals, important social and effective aspects of learning can be lost. Consider a student who "scores well" but feels completely disconnected from the material.

Bias in the algorithm

AI systems learn from existing datasets. If those datasets contain biases, for example based on language level, cultural background, or gender, those prejudices can be unconsciously reinforced. An adaptive learning system may thus unintentionally have lower expectations of certain groups of students. This not only leads to unequal opportunities, but also to the risk that AI makes decisions (e.g., about access to follow-up modules) without those decisions being properly explainable or verifiable.

Decline in self-management and critical thinking

When AI constantly makes suggestions ("You should do this exercise now," "Choose this topic for your essay"), there is a risk that students will make dependent choices. The learning process then becomes externally driven, rather than intrinsically motivated. Self-regulation, curiosity, and critical thinking are crucial skills for the future. AI should support, but not take over. If students no longer learn to make their own choices, they lose control of their own learning path.

Organizations are increasingly opting for a hybrid approach: the chatbot acts as the first point of contact and handles simple matters independently. Only when the conversation deviates from the script is it forwarded to an employee. This keeps costs low, while customers still receive personal assistance when needed.

Privacy and data security

Educational data is particularly sensitive. AI systems in the classroom collect personal information about behavior, performance, interests, and learning style. If this data is not properly secured or is shared with commercial parties, students (and schools) run significant risks. These include data breaches, unlawful profiling, or the reuse of data for marketing purposes. Transparency about what a system collects and who has access to it is essential.

Who bears ultimate responsibility?

An AI-driven system that guides students, suggests decisions, or even gives grades raises fundamental questions about responsibility. Who is liable if a student is disadvantaged by an error in the system? Can a teacher intervene? And is that transparent enough? Without clear human supervision, schools risk losing (part of) their pedagogical autonomy to black boxes. AI can be a valuable assistant, but it should never completely take over the role of teacher.

AI as a tool, not as a helmsman

AI offers undeniable opportunities to make learning more effective and personalized. But as soon as we give the system itself control over the learning process, risks arise in terms of autonomy, inequality, bias, and data security. The power lies precisely in the combination of AI and human guidance. Teachers remain essential for adding nuance, empathy, and reflection to the learning process and for using technology consciously, critically, and ethically.
