The AI revolution is in full swing. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, one thing has become clear: AI is no longer a thing of the future—it is here, now, and it is changing the playing field for businesses worldwide. For entrepreneurs, executives, and board members, this means one thing: it is time to take a stand.
In episode 2 of the AI Koploperscast, we talk to none other than Professor Fred van Eenenaam, an authority at the intersection of strategy, innovation, and corporate governance. From the clubhouse of Dutch entrepreneurship, the Carbon House, Fred shares his vision on how leaders can deal with AI in a strategic and responsible manner.
Why this episode is essential for leaders
AI is not only changing systems and processes—it is changing decision-making, responsibility, and the social contract within your organization. Fred brings more than 25 years of experience as a boardroom strategist, professor at Erasmus, Harvard, Nyenrode, and other institutions, and founder of The Decision Group.
He offers insights that go beyond hype and headlines. We discuss:
- How executives and regulators can understand and drive AI.
- Why AI is a strategic issue, not an IT party.
- How to get your employees on board with the changes without causing anxiety.
- How corporate governance plays a key role in responsible AI implementation.
From strategy to action: how to take the right first steps
According to Fred, good AI leadership starts with having a clear core strategy:
- What value do you deliver to customers?
- Why are you better at this than your competitors?
- How do you embed that value in your organization and tech stack?
Only then does the question arise: where can AI add value? Not the other way around. "AI is not a goal, but a means to achieve your goals faster, smarter, or more sustainably," says Fred.
Without a clear strategy, any AI initiative is doomed to fail.
Involving employees: fair, practical, and inclusive
Many leaders struggle with questions such as: how do I communicate about AI? How do I prevent fear or resistance? Fred's answer is crystal clear: be honest, provide direction, and organize inclusion.
Don't guarantee job security, but do guarantee fair treatment. Make it clear: you are part of the family, and we will take you with us.
Whether it's programmers worried about their jobs or marketing teams experimenting with ChatGPT, the point is that as an organization, you enter into a social contract. That requires:
- Transparent communication (think town hall meetings or peer review sessions).
- Space for small-scale experiments.
- Feedback loops in which lessons learned are shared and weighed.
- Embedding responsibility in your governance structure.
Big bang or pilot? What suits your organizational culture?
In this episode, we also discuss different routes to AI implementation:
- Major transformations involving the widespread rollout of AI.
- Phased pilots in which small initiatives are tested and scaled up.
Both are valid, but the choice depends on your culture, your tech maturity, and your people. Fred advises: be clear about your approach, and make sure it aligns with your risk profile and strategic goal. And importantly: AI sometimes requires experimentation in chaos, but always within clear frameworks.
5 insights from this episode
- Strategy first, technology follows. Without a clear direction, AI is just a toy.
- AI should strengthen your value proposition. It is not an IT tool, but a strategic lever.
- Clarity is crucial. Vagueness leads to fragmentation, clarity to targeted innovation.
- Make room for experimentation. Organize sessions, let ideas flow, and learn together.
- Corporate governance is not a hindrance, but a framework. It helps to balance ethics, risks, and results.
“AI is just super cool. But only if you know what you want to achieve with it.”
— Prof. Fred van Eenenaam
