In 2023, we saw AI develop at lightning speed, with generative AI in particular stimulating growth and efficiency in various sectors. This rapid (r)evolution took some organizations by surprise, while giving others a clear head start. In this blog article, we discuss last year's developments and look ahead to what AI could mean for the Dutch workforce in 2024.

Quarter 1 (January – March 2023):
  • MIT and Mass General Hospital developed AI for lung cancer detection. AI integrated into walking sticks for the visually impaired. OpenAI's agreement with Microsoft.
  • ChatGPT passes the USMLE. Google introduces Bard A.I., and Microsoft launches Bing with ChatGPT. Musical AI innovations from Google and Baidu.
  • Adobe’s Firefly, Canva’s AI Design Assistants. OpenAI’s ChatGPT APIs and GPT-4. HubSpot’s and Zoom’s AI tools. Khan Academy’s Khanmigo platform.
Quarter 2 (April – June 2023):
  • Integration of ChatGPT with Boston Dynamics. Russian Sberbank's GigaChat. AI in healthcare by Apple. Adobe's expansion of Firefly. Snapchat's "My AI."
  • AI-driven scientific experiments by robots. Launch of ChatGPT mobile app. Midjourney 5.1 and Stability AI's StableStudio. Google's Vertex AI and Microsoft Azure AI.
  • Apple's Vision Pro AR headset. OpenAI's announcement of an AI App Store. Biotech companies and AI in drug development.
Quarter 3 (July – September 2023):
  • POE.com adds Google Palm2, Claude2-100K, GPT4-32K. Meta-AI's Llama2 and Anthropic's Claude2. Expansion of generative AI in Google Cloud's Vertex AI.
  • AtomAI in microscopy data analysis. Kneron’s KL730 NPU chip for edge AI. Google’s AI Genesis for journalism.
  • OpenAI's improvements to ChatGPT and DALL·E 3. Midjourney's "Vary Region" feature and Stability AI's text-to-audio generation. YouTube's AI editing app.
Quarter 4 (October – December 2023):
  • ElevenLabs’ AI language translation. Dell, Intel, and Cambridge’s Dawn Phase 1 supercomputer. Google’s Search Generative Experience.
  • xAI's AI chatbot "Grok." OpenAI's Assistants API. Samsung's Gauss AI model.
  • Google's Gemini model. AMD's AI hardware developments. The establishment of the AI Alliance for Responsible Innovation.

Advanced AI agents and multimedia: The growth in agent-based models and generative multimedia is opening up new opportunities for companies to streamline processes.  
White-collar work and AI: Knowledge workers will see their professions enhanced by AI, offering new opportunities for efficiency and innovation.
AI regulation and compliance: Companies must adapt to new AI regulations, especially in the areas of privacy and automated decision-making.
AI technology in the workplace: More companies will allow AI technologies in the workplace, enabling employees to work more efficiently and innovatively.
Investment in AI governance: Companies will invest in AI governance and compliance to manage risks.
AI startups and advanced AI solutions: The emergence of new AI startups with advanced solutions promises to enrich the market with innovative applications.
